History

William P. Letchworth was in search of a good place to make a country retreat where he could cheer his family and friends. On one of the good mornings, in the spring of 1858, he traveled by train as it slowly neared a bridge high above the Genesee River. While he was standing on the bridge, he was attracted by the natural beauty of the charmer of the powerful river rushing below. Looking at the falls, he observed the sun shining on the spray underneath that formed a visible fascinating rainbow. There was a house in the vicinity that was not in a good state to be used.

Letchworth obtained the house in February 1859 and straight away started refurbishing it. The native Indians had named the area “An-de-ka-ga-kwa” which means “the place where the sun lingers”. It has been said through Indian superstitions that when the sun travels through the glen it stops for a short time longer there than at any other section of the valley. Persuaded by this, Letchworth elected the work “Iris”, which is another word for rainbow, and named it the Glen Iris.
